Further Information
Litter: The bane of some schools and communities and a key area of importance for the scheme.
Waste minimisation: Reducing, re-using, and recycling leads to an appreciation of the materials we find on our planet and the importance of reducing the waste we generate.
Energy: Efficient use of lighting and heating in schools and learning to switch equipment off once it has been used helps schools to save money and reduce the carbon produced.
Water: Several actions can be taken which will prevent our streams and rivers from being used to top up our water supplies:
With increasingly warm summer temperatures, water restrictions will continue and the need to conserve water remains important.
Transport: Travel to school by car has increased enormously in the last 20 years, contributing to congested roads, and in turn leading to greater pollution and increased rates of asthma. Pupils who walk are gaining a valuable opportunity to exercise, are exposed to much less pollution than they would inside a car, and arrive at school alert and ready to learn.
Healthy living: The importance of exercise and a balanced diet are lessons for the well being of pupils in school. Support is available through transport-related work, including developing School Travel Plans.
School grounds: Used well, they can lead to purposeful, happy playtimes and learning experiences. They can include havens of peace, arenas for the next Olympic champions, and homes for wildlife.
Biodiversity: With research, discussion and imaginative planting, school grounds can foster a huge range of plant and animal species.
Global perspectives:'think global, act local' reminds us all that we share the same planet and face the same environmental issues. Together we can make decisions that will benefit the world for future generations.
