Welcome to Cornholme J, I and N School - 01706 812787 - OL14 8PL - Headmaster - Mr. A. Sapey

Visiting after 70 years

Cornholme school had a surprise visitor at the end of September. Mr Bob Truelove and his wife Pat arrived at the school to ask if they could have a look round. This wasn’t the normal prospective parent or even a normal former pupil who the school will always welcome back.

Mr Truelove was evacuated to Cornholme at the age of nine from Brighton at the beginning of 1940. He stayed in the area for about a year with the Hindle family and then the Sutcliffe family. He returned home in the middle of 1941 as his mother considered it safe, only to be bombed whilst visiting the local cinema.

This was the first visit to Yorkshire in nearly 70 years and he had taken a chance to catch the bus from Halifax to see what still remained of the village he remembered so well.  The school was delighted to welcome a former pupil and the year 6 children received an impromptu history lesson before Bob and his wife had a school dinner and chatted with the staff about his memories of Cornholme in wartime.

If anyone remembers Bob and would like to get touch they can do so through the school.
